Particles
Particles mark the role of each word in a sentence. This is the complete list that appears in Minna no Nihongo I.
Basic particles

| は | Marks the topic of the sentence (read "wa") | 私は 学生です。 |
| が | Marks the subject of what exists, is perceived or is wanted | 庭に 犬がいます。 |
| を | Marks the direct object | パンを 食べます。 |
| も | "also"; replaces は or が | グプタさんも 会社員です。 |
| の | Joins two nouns: possession, belonging, origin or topic | IMCの 社員です。 |
| と | "and" (a complete list); also "with" someone | 家族と 行きます。 |
| や | "and" between examples, without being exhaustive (often with など) | 手紙や 写真があります。 |
Place, time and direction

| に | Point in time, place of existence, recipient and purpose | 6 時に 起きます。 |
| で | Place where the action happens, means of transport, tool | 駅で 新聞を 買います。 |

| まで | "until", "as far as" (time or place) | 5 時までです。 |

Sentence-final and nuance particles

| よ | Introduces information the listener does not know | この 電車は 行きませんよ。 |

| けど | "but", the informal version of が | いいけど、 高かった？ |
| だけ | "only" | 休みは 日曜日だけです。 |
| ぐらい | "about", an approximate amount | 30 分ぐらいです。 |
| でも | Offers something as an example when inviting | お 茶でも 飲みませんか。 |
| について | "about", "regarding" | 日本について 話します。 |
