祇園祭はどうでしたか
The past tense of nouns and adjectives, and how to compare two things or pick the best of a group.
N／A-な でした ／ じゃありませんでした
The past of です is でした and the past of じゃありません is じゃありませんでした. It works the same for nouns and -な adjectives: 雨でした (it was rainy), 暇じゃありませんでした (I wasn't free).
Examples
きのうは 雨でした。
It rained yesterday.
先週は 暇じゃありませんでした。
I wasn't free last week.
A-い → 〜かったです ／ 〜くなかったです
-い adjectives conjugate the past themselves: 暑い → 暑かったです (it was hot), 暑くなかったです (it wasn't hot). The past of いい is よかったです.
Examples
旅行は 楽しかったです。
The trip was fun.
天気はよくなかったです。
The weather wasn't good.
N1 は N2 より A です
より marks what you compare against: この 車は あの 車より 大きいです (this car is bigger than that one).
Examples
飛行機は 船より 速いです。
The plane is faster than the ship.
N1 と N2 と どちらが A ですか。…N の ほうが A です
To ask which of two things is more…, you use どちら, whatever the category. You answer with 〜の ほうが: サッカーと 野球と どちらが おもしろいですか。…サッカーの ほうが おもしろいです. If they are equal: どちらも (both).
Examples
夏と 冬とどちらが 好きですか。… 夏のほうが 好きです。
Which do you prefer, summer or winter? …I prefer summer.
N [の 中]で 何／どこ／誰／いつ が いちばん A ですか
いちばん expresses the superlative within a group: 日本 料理[の 中]で 何が いちばん おいしいですか. The question word changes depending on whether you ask about a thing, a place, a person or a time.
Examples
1 年でいつがいちばん 寒いですか。…2 月がいちばん 寒いです。
When is it coldest in the year? …In February.
A-い／A-な の
の also stands in for the noun after an adjective, so you don't repeat it: 大きいのを ください (the big one, please).
Examples
どんなかばんですか。… 黒いのです。
Which bag is it? …The black one.
